Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. It began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, while in Ireland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom it is observed in October. –Wikipedia
During February our staff will be celebrating and honoring Black History Month in their classrooms. We will share the happenings in the classroom, as well as other resources being offered throughout our community.
Upper School History Teacher Matt Vallus shared some important upcoming events and seminars (in our area) that are planned for Black History Month.
To honor Black History Month, Stage I Teacher Kendra McKenzie's class will read a picture book by a Black author and/or illustrator and featuring Black characters each day throughout February. The class will also read a page from Young, Gifted, and Black by Jamia Wilson and Andrea Pippins each day and learn about Black heroes from past and present. Their naptime music will feature songs by Black artists. As questions arise and conversations take place, classroom learning will happen organically as students search for answers and develop thoughts and ideas.
