New Upper School Elective: "Art & Science. Science & Art"
Janet Szeto, Carolyn Borman
Upper school students have been treated to a new interdisciplinary elective this year. It was a semester of projects involving science and its application to art processes taught by art teacher Janet Szeto and chemistry teacher Jamie Benigna.
The pictures shown are of their second-to-last project: the penny patina project. Students learned about the reactivity of metals and the oxidation process. They learned and mixed up some patina recipes and effectively produced varied colors of patina on copper pennies. These were arranged thoughtfully before being encased in resin to produce a coaster. The students are in the chemistry classroom, working on the final stages of the process - arranging pennies and pictures of tools used for the project.
