Welcome Tyler!
From Middle and Upper School Director, Susannah Nichols: I would describe our girls’ soccer team as a microcosm of Roeper—think of all the different “Roeper Kids” we have—they all play soccer. The one thing they have in common? They adore this guy. We are so lucky that Tyler is able to take the next steps in his career as an educator here at Roeper.
What is your new position at Roeper?
Hello! My name is Tyler, or Ty, and I am the new 6th grade English teacher at Roeper. I am tasked with the HUGE role following that of Patrick Harris. Though that is daunting, I am extremely excited and grateful to be working closely with Roz and Ben in the English department to help this class flourish.
What were one or two highlights in your life?
One highlight in my life is working closely with the students at Cesar Chavez Academy in Detroit. This is a point in my life where not only did I grow as an educator, but also as a person who was immersed in a new and diverse Latinx community.
What would you like to share about yourself, your family, and your birthplace?
For the past five years I have been the Head Coach for the Girls’ Varsity Soccer team. Soccer isn’t just a sport. It is family, friends, and community. I am so very proud of the Roeper student athletes that come through this program and for the commitment and drive that they show in sport and school.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
One of my passions, outside of education, is photography. I believe that photography is a great way to connect with nature, friends, and even strangers. I have been doing photography since 2019 when I bought my first camera. I shoot both film and digital photos and will always stick to my belief that Nikon is the BEST camera company!
What is a topic or skill that you love to teach or share and why do you like to?
A skill that I believe is essential to becoming a contributing member of a community is speaking. More specifically, speaking to groups of people. Being able to eloquently get your point across, or to teach a class a certain topic with precise word-choice is a skill that will get you very far in life.
What is it that appealed to you about Roeper when you first became acquainted with the school?
When I first became acquainted with Roeper five years ago, I noticed the community. This community that supports their students in every way. From interest based learning to Spooky Volleyball, people in this community support each other like no-other. I feel so appreciative that I have been given that same support during my first few weeks at Roeper.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
