Welcome Jessica!
From Middle and Upper School Director, Susannah Nichols: During her time with us last year, Jessie's serenity, organization, and kindness made her instantly beloved among staff and students alike. When considering Jessie for this job, we were most impressed by her balance of pragmatic orderliness, connection to our philosophy values, and ability to calmly handle anything a day at Roeper might sling her way.
INTERVIEW:
What is your new position at Roeper - details like what subjects you will be teaching or for staff, what your job entails, which building will you be working in and who will you be working with most closely with? My new position at Roeper is the Assistant to the College Counseling Office for the Upper School in Birmingham. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work closely with the main office, and specifically with Patricia Bostwick, Hale Williams, and Gretchen Osgood.
What were one or two highlights in your life?
Two highlights of my life so far have been getting engaged and beginning the process of planning a wedding, as well as spending my summers up north on a small lake in Harbor Springs.
What would you like to share about yourself, your family, and your birthplace?
I am a Michigan native, born on the east side of Detroit, but I have lived in Birmingham/Bloomfield the entirety of my life. I have a fairly large family; our holiday get-togethers typically involve around 30 to 40 people. I absolutely love Detroit; the Riverfront and Campus Martius Park are some of my favorite spots to be during the summer, and of course, Ford Field during the fall.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
You can find me out in my garden, on a lake, or out exploring new restaurants and parks in the state.
What is a topic or skill that you love to teach or share and why do you like to?
Gardening! One of my favorite topics to share with others is how to establish your own vegetable garden or food forest. I truly feel there is a huge sense of accomplishment and connection when we learn how to grow our own food, and it’s such an enjoyable way to unwind at the end of a long day.
What is it that appealed to you about Roeper when you first became acquainted with the school?
One thing that truly drew me to Roeper was the sense of community. From the moment I entered the school and had the chance to interact with both students and faculty, I felt the immense care and compassion that Roeper has for its students and community. I saw it best last year in the students and how they approach the world around them, from the clubs they joined to the events that they hosted. I always come away feeling inspired by Roeper’s approach to education and leadership among young people, and I look forward to witnessing more of that this year.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I am looking forward to a new and exciting school year!
