Swim Goggles and Swim Teachers Needed for Make a Splash

May is National Water Safety Month and The Roeper School Make a Splash  Program is Celebrating 13 years addressing water safety and racial inequity in swimming by offering this life-saving program.  The Roeper Make a Splash program has served over 600 children ages 5-14 years since 2010 in the Detroit Metropolitan area.

 

In swimming pools, African American children are nearly six times more likely to drown than white children, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In a 2017 study by the USA Swimming Foundation, 64 percent of African American children and 45 percent of Hispanic and Latinx children reported having little to no swimming ability.  The Roeper Make a Splash program is a Community Outreach initiative that  provides free and reduced-cost swim lessons to predominantly African American and Hispanic children who lack access to opportunities to learn how to swim. 

 

This year’s program is scheduled for August 14-19, 2023.  On-Site Registration 12 noon to 1:30 pm. Interested supporters, swim teachers please contact Carolyn Lett .

 

 

Want to support the program? Donate some goggles! Students can drop new swim goggles (not snorkels please) at Bloomfield Hills Campus  into the collection bin in the CCB front hallway and at the Birmingham Campus in the main office.   Thank you for your support!
