Working as a permanent substitute teacher at Roeper for many years, I realized how much I loved being part of this community. When the permanent substitute teacher position was no longer available, I decided to continue working at Roeper on an as needed basis. Now, in my new position as an Associate Teacher I will have the honor of working in the Lower School Domes in Stage II with the creative, loving Jennifer Allen and her amazing students. Working with the entire Stage II Team and Staff is a gift.
What were one or two highlights in your life?
My first highlight was playing violin in the Kalamzoo Youth Symphony at the age of 16. One summer I traveled with the Symphony on our European Tour. The response to our concerts sent chills throughout my body, attendees at our concerts admired our sound and that we were so young to travel from the USA. Each venue we played in was magnificent and full of history. My second highlight was campaigning for public office. I walked my district, going door to door, learning, growing and getting to know so many wonderful residents. I learned what issues were important to residents, and felt honored when they felt comfortable to share with me.
What would you like to share about yourself, your family, and your birthplace?
I grew up in South Haven, Michigan, as part of a tight-knit caring family. My small town upbringing gave me a strong foundation upon which I built a joyous life. My father was a judge—a compassionate man. My mother was a teacher—innovative and nurturing. I have a younger brother Paul.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I love to walk/hike. In nature, I am overwhelmed in awe of its beauty, I feel a part of the universe. I also love my position with Community Mental Health Association of Michigan (CMHA ) as Editor of
Connections. In this position I interview people and post their stories to inspire, encourage and empower others.
What is a topic or skill that you love to teach or share and why do you like to?
I am grateful for the opportunity to model and teach love, patience and kindness to my students at Roeper. These skills provide a strong foundation for learning to take place. Teaching that personal challenges are opportunities, and taking risks moves us forward to realize our individual, unique dreams. We each bring value to the world. We are the universe.
What is it that appealed to you about Roeper when you first became acquainted with the school?
Roeper’s students and their curiosity are amazing to experience. Roeper’s teachers and their patient, compassionate teaching that recognizes the treasure in each child is impressive. The kindness of the entire community that welcomed me with open arms and hearts is like no other.

I am blessed with four beautiful adult daughters, three sons in law, and my youngest daughter’s boyfriend, five grandsons, ages 4–10, and a granddaughter age 2. Their love and energy is the wind beneath my wings. My husband Murray, supports my dreams, encouraging me every day to be the best Lois I can be.
