Board Approves New DEIJ Committee

At last night’s board meeting, Roeper School board members approved the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) Committee as a new standing committee. The purpose of the committee is to ensure that a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice perspective is part of discussion, debate, and decision making within each standing committee. Current standing committees include: Finance and Investment, Buildings and Grounds, Education, Trusteeship, and Development. The Head of School, Board Trustees, and Administrators make up the committees.

With the establishment of the DEIJ standing committee, the School is assuring the Roeper community that a diverse approach to developing the School’s strategic direction will remain a priority and that it is committed to deepening its commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice elements within the Roeper philosophy and core tenets.

Board member, Jay B. Marks, Ph.D., shares, "It is essential that diversity, equity, inclusion and justice is situated at the center of our identity and function as a school and the work of our Board, and that we hold ourselves accountable for establishing and committing to the implementation of equitable practices, policies, and procedures that honors the diversity of our school and community. The approval of this Standing Committee at the Board level is an example of our commitment to honoring and cultivating the diversity of our students, staff, families, and community. What a proud moment for our Board and school community!!!"

“I was there to witness this pivotal moment in Roeper’s history,” states Carolyn Lett, Director, Diversity & Community Programs.  “The establishment of a DEIJ Committee at the board level speaks volumes to the stewards of our school’s commitment to the work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.  I was there as each board member present, one after the other gave an audible, enthusiastic YES as they voted to make DEIJ a standing committee.  The board realizes that the world we live and exist in continues to change and evolve.  Therefore, we must do the same to ensure that our commitment to 'justice rather power' is implemented.  I am reminded of Annemarie’s words that speak to creating an environment that helps all community members, children, and adults to accept and understand our differences and similarities.  Annemarie stated that 'No goal exists unless it is implemented.'  Our board is answering this call and for this I am thankful.”
