Roeper Forensics Shines at Mackinac Tournament

Michigan Speech Coaches, Inc. (MSCI) held its annual spring conference and tournament at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. The conference was a kickoff to next year and requires students to prepare an entirely new piece and perform it just two weeks after States.

Fifteen students successfully put into practice what they learned over the season. Three were top twelve semi-finalists (Brogi Amaral, Kennedy Anderson, and Neel Grover) and seven placed in the top six, including the mini-multiple of Meira Gable, Kaitlyn Gruber, Hollis Perry, Brooklyn Pfeffer, and Cosmo Steffke with a second place in Storytelling Mini Multiple, Anna Stuntz placing second in Poetry Slam, and seventh grader Robert Walinske winning first place in Nat Geo Interpretation!

In addition, MSCI presents five special coach of the year awards at the event. Candidates must have made an impact on their teams and are required to be nominated by their coaching peers. This year, our very own Roeper Forensics Assistant Coach Laura Moore was honored as the MSCI Assistant Coach of the Year. And in a surprise twist, Roeper ’18 alum Katarina Moore (and Laura’s daughter) was awarded the MSCI Head Coach of the Year award for her work at Mason County Central High School. This is a huge honor and a testament to the legacy and impact that Roeper Forensics under the mentorship of Dan Jacobs—who was inducted into the MSCI Coaches Hall of Fame himself a few years back—has had across the state.
