Roeper Golden Apple recipient, Shamayim Harris ("Mama Shu") is continuing to improve her neighborhood in Highland Park, called the Avalon Project. Her plan is to open a vegetarian cafe with a greenhouse where unfortunately the contaminants of an old gas station remained. Our own Beth Vens of RPC fame not to mention current and alum parent saw this problem in the news and acted. Beth works for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality which has funds to remove this type of contamination. Here is the great article on the Curbed Detroit website: Avalon Project. It shows photos of the project buildings and gardens, as well as the removal of the old gas tanks. Beth sent in the photo of her (on right) with Mama Shu. Great story!
