From Upper School Director, Susannah Nichols: Many of you know that outside my office is a plaque honoring recipients of the Order of the Roeperian Empire—an annual award bestowed on our upper school students who have given unselfishly of their time and energy for the betterment of our school community. Every day, I’ve walked past Shannon Cass Calay’s name, not knowing that somewhere her life was leading her back to Roeper, where she’ll serve as middle school science faculty this year. I am looking forward to all the ways I am sure we will learn and be inspired by Shannon this year. Welcome!

What is your new position at Roeper?
Middle School Science Teacher.
What are one or two highlights of your life?
1) Attending Roeper 7th-12th Grade. Graduated 1988.
2) Coming back to teach science at Roeper after 24 years as a research fishery biologist at the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Where are you from, and what would you like to share about yourself and your family?
I am from Livonia, Michigan. I've also lived in Florida and California. I have a husband, Robert and two kids, Tristan and Jennifer.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to fence, play musical instruments (e.g. flute, baritone), garden and rockhound all over Michigan.
What is a topic or skill that you love to teach or share and why?
I love to teach science because it's all about exploration and curiosity!
Why Roeper?
I loved being a student at Roeper because Roeper encouraged exploration, curiosity and self-discovery as well as responsibility, humanitarianism and community building. I am excited to contribute to that mission!
What's something most people don't know about you?
I make jewelry out of the rocks I collect in Michigan. I have a whole rock polishing and cutting production line in my basement! Sometimes I even bring them to local craft fairs.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I first took fencing at Roeper Camp with Norma Carter, and 50 years later I still enjoy it! I fence foil and epee at Bay Regional Fencing Alliance in Freeland, Michigan. I also fenced on the varsity fencing team at Roeper with Ann Marsh (who later was an Olympic fencer).
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
