Introducing Jana Soverinsky, Stage II Teacher

WELCOME JANA!

From Lower School Dean of Students, Amber Webb - Jana is a wonderful find for Roeper in this Stage II position being a fully trained Regio Emilia Teacher with solid experience in this teaching method which we incorporate in our early childhood classrooms. The approach "focuses on a child's strengths and ability to learn through exploration, collaboration, and expression via multiple "languages" like art and music, all within a supportive environment that values the child as a capable individual with rights."  Jana's background perfectly aligns with our Roeper philosophy. She understands children and provides a warm and supportive classroom environment for her students. She will be able to hit the ground running from day one.

Questions and Answers:

What is your new position at Roeper?
I will be a Stage ll classroom teacher and will be working in the domes.

What were one or two highlights in your life?
My greatest joy and THE highlight of my life is my family.  Travel has also been an integral part of my life.  After college I worked on a Cruise Ship for a year.  I’ve lived and taught in Mali, West Africa for 2 years and my family recently rode our bikes across the Netherlands.

What would you like to share about yourself, your family, and your birthplace?
I grew up outside of Chicago in a town called Wilmette. I am the youngest of 4 children. I’m married to Jerry who grew up in Southfield and our son, Max, is 15. We’ve recently moved from Grand Rapids so that Max could attend The Roper Upper School.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?
I spend  most of my time together with my family and our friends.  We love the outdoors and often take road trips to find cool parks for hiking and biking.

What is a topic or skill that you love to teach or share and why do you like to?
I absolutely love working with younger learners and guiding them in discovering their gifts and talents.  I also get to be one of their first teachers in learning to read. It is such a magical experience, opening the door for them as they access a whole new world and become more independent in their learning.

What is it that appealed to you about Roeper when you first became acquainted with the school?
My husband and I sought out Roeper for our son as we were very impressed with what the school had to offer:  It values students for who they are as learners; it offers an inclusive and supportive community of staff and families; it allows students to guide their own learning path with meaning and purpose; and it promotes a common goal where students apply their strengths for the greater good. These are the same things that drew me to the school as teacher, it’s an incredibly meaningful and deliberate educational environment.
