Introducing Kyla Robison, LS Spanish Teacher

Carolyn Borman
Please welcome Kyla!

From Lower School Director Meghan Stott:
Please welcome Kyla Robison as our new Lower School Spanish Teacher.  A bilingual Spanish and English speaker, Kyla lived and taught at the International School in Tegucigalpa in Honduras where she designed and delivered a standards-aligned curriculum to her students in both the Lower and Middle schools.
Kyla is a TEFL and ESL certified teacher, and her strong classroom management skills were evident throughout her demonstration lesson. In addition to teaching, Kyla has a passion for sports and has played a variety of team sports.  She loves coaching and will support our Middle School Volleyball team this year.

What is your new position at Roeper - details like what courses you will be teaching, are you working with other faculty?
I am the new Spanish Language Teacher at Roeper, and I am so excited to do dramas, projects, and more to support my amazing students in gaining Spanish fluency.  What were one or two highlights of your life?
One highlight of my life would be graduating college and becoming a licensed teacher. Another would be travel in general, and one of my favorite trips was to the Copán Ruins in Copán, Honduras where I toured the ruins of a Maya civilization! If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be and why?
I would love to live in Spain for a year if I could! I have always wanted to experience the culture, try the food, and explore the country. What are some things you'd like to share about yourself, your family and birthplace?
I grew up nearby in West Bloomfield. There's so much I love about Michigan like the gorgeous lakes and places to visit! I really enjoy spending time with my family and friends, and I love when we have game nights. What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
Outside of work I like doing yoga, hiking, and traveling. I also really enjoy painting. What is a topic or skill that you love to teach or share and why?
I love to teach writing skills because my students get to practice formatting, grammar, spelling, and more while sharing about a topic that excites/inspires them. I love reading the finished products and getting to learn more about my students and their interests/talents!
What is it that appealed to you about Roeper when you took the job?
One thing that really impressed me about Roeper when I first decided to apply was the focus on student-led lessons and student individuality. My philosophy of education is very similar; I strive to have an engaging and safe educational environment, where each student knows they have ownership of their own learning and the freedom to be authentically themselves.
