Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing our new faculty and staff in Roeper news posts. Our new folks were nice enough to complete a questionnaire telling us something about themselves and included is information from their Department Directors.
From Communications and Marketing Director, Kari Kress: I am excited to have Jack on our team and am confident that he will successfully capture the Roeper spirit and philosophy digitally and in print. In past jobs he has demonstrated a passion for graphic design and demonstrated his writing prowess. His experience has helped him to understand the impact language has on messaging and communication.
What is your new position at Roeper - details like what courses you will be teaching, are you working with other faculty?
I’m a digital marketing and design specialist. I’ll be managing Roeper’s social media content, working on digital advertising, and helping implement marketing/communications plans. I’ll also be working on some designing and branding for the school.
What were one or two highlights of your life?
The first one that comes to mind is definitely graduating from Michigan State University. I had such a great four years, in and out of the classroom, and the things that I learned will stick with me for the rest of my life.
Not so much of a personal accolade, but another big highlight of my life was the first Michigan State football game that I attended as a student. The way that over 70,000 people came together to cheer on a single team under the lights was surreal. It felt like I was in a movie.
If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be and why?
There are endless places that I’d like to go to for a vacation. That said, if I had to live somewhere for an entire year, I’d probably live in Japan. It would be a great opportunity to learn about a new culture and possibly a new language. The city is so beautiful, and I’ve only heard great things about the country.
What are some things you’d like to share about yourself, your family and birthplace?
I was born in Texas and have lived in eight different places, including Shanghai, China as a kid. I think that surrounding yourself in unique people and cultures is a great way to grow as a person and definitely shaped a huge part of my identity. My family is really scattered geographically — my parents live in Florida and my brother lives in Chicago. I always identified with the state of Michigan the most, which is why I chose to move here a couple of years ago.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I love going to sporting events – I go to a lot of Tigers games during the summer. I also love to stay active. I play summer softball league, a soccer league, and I plan to do a volleyball league this summer. I also do some “extreme sports” like skateboarding and snowboarding.
Outside of sports, I love going to concerts, eating food, and playing video games.
What is a topic or skill that you love to teach or share and why?
Photoshop! There are a ton of fun tools that anybody can do in Photoshop. A lot of the coolest things don’t take any “skill” or “training” and can go a long way to help in your personal or professional lives. Even though it seems like a creative, goofy skill to have, it’s actually really process-driven. Even analytical people can show off their creativity in programs like Photoshop and Illustrator.
What is it that appealed to you about Roeper when you took the job?
I knew about Roeper and have always had a familiarity with K-12 schools, but what really stood out to me was when I learned about the organization’s commitment to creating a diverse environment for the students. The school doesn’t fit the mold of the stereotypical private school — it definitely seemed like a fun place to learn while growing up.
