Middle School makerspace and science teacher Wendy Mayer organized a trip for middle school girls to attend the Girls GET-IT Technology Day at Wayne County Community College, a day for girls in grades 4–8 to explore facets of computer science, interact with sponsors, participate in a live Tech Expo, and learn how IT is used in companies across Michigan. This day was sponsored by the Michigan Council of Women in Technology.
There was an exhibition area where various Michigan companies shared tech opportunities and information about their use of technology. The virtua reality goggles were a big favorite. There were three workshops the girls went to about autonomous vehicles, data visualization and career opportunities at Ford Motor Company. They had opportunities to work together and with girls from other schools on problem solving activities. The girls had a great time, learned about opportunities in the field of technology and came home with a bag full of give aways and a T-shirt as souvenirs of the day.
