Competitive Mountain Bike Racer in Our Midst!

Carolyn Borman
Roeper 9th Grader, Ben Hawes is an avid mountain bike racer who participates in the MiSCA series for the Rochester Mountain Bike Team (a composite team of various high schools in the area). He races Junior Varsity Grades 9/10 and just finished 10th last week out of 100 riders. On Sunday he will ride at the State Championships at Lakeshore Park in Novi. He would love to recruit some fellow Roeper students or even start a club next year. See the MiSCA website for results.

Ben learned how to ride a bike when he was about 3 years old, and he hasn’t stopped! He discovered mountain biking at age nine. At age 11, he was able to go on advanced trails with his dad and joined the Rochester Mountain Bike Team (RMBT). Ben’s dad is a coach for the team, and they have practices twice a week from Spring through the biking season in mid-October. Last year he finished as the 14th fastest middle schooler in Michigan. He is currently ranked 11th overall in the JV 9/10th grade category. Ben was selected to be part of the Elite team for RMBT which means more training with personalized training plans. Besides practice, Ben tries to get in a 15-20 mile ride every day. Come winter, he'll be on a stationary "Swift" bike designed for racers. When he’s not on his bike, Ben may be found enjoying his other passion – fishing!
