Future Problem Solving Course for 2022-2023

Finn Axelarris
Middle and Upper School course offered by Finn Axelarris and Dan Jacobs for next year.
We have a wonderful new Middle & Upper School class offering for next year called Future Problem Solving. The class was developed by Roeper sophomore Finn Axelarris and Middle/Upper School teacher Dan Jacobs, and the pilot class was a great success!

Here’s the course description:

The first step in being the change you hope to see in the world is to envision a more compassionate, healthy world. Future Problem Solving (FPS) uses non-competitive and competitive activities to help us all imagine and work toward a positive future on Earth (and sometimes on Mars and beyond). Activities encourage building and using critical thinking, creativity, and decision-making skills to come up with and solve potential problems of the future. Examples of past topics and scenarios include the impact of humans on the environment, poverty, water use, food waste, and more.

The main category that this class focuses on is Global Issues Problem Solving (GIPS) from the Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI) curriculum which involves reading a scenario from the future, coming up with possible challenges for humanity, and then coming up with solutions. Students also have opportunities to interact with others on local, state, and international levels. More information about the program can be found at FPSPI.org.

8th-graders Leif Axelarris, Goni Wong, and Will Claypool recently competed as a team in the FPSPI State Bowl as part of their FPS class. They placed third in the state out of dozens of competing teams. Finn Axelarris and Leif Axelarris also placed second and first respectively for individual competitions and have been invited to compete in the international competition this summer.
