Clubs on the Birmingham Campus

Carolyn Borman
Every week in the M/US newsletter we are exploring clubs and activities at the Birmingham campus. To date, we've introduced you to the Improv Club, the Palentontology and Geology Club, The Sierra Club, and the AVLCP club (A Very Long Climate Project). This week we'd like to tell you about the Dungeons and Dragons Club.

Game Master:
"So you walk into the room, and there are 4 goblins standing near a chest, they appear to be playing a game of chance. What's your move"

Player:
"I'm going to announce myself loudly in a regal voice, declaring myself the new king of all goblins!"

Game Master:
"Bold plan...roll a Deception check!"

Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop Role-Playing Game that was created by Gary Gygax & David Arneson back in 1974. In the game, players take on the roles of characters they create and are put through stories designed by another player, the "Game Master". These stories are called campaigns, and during the game players utilize dice rolls to see how successful their decisions and tactics are. The game rewards strategy, quick-thinking, and creativity, and is as open-ended or "railroady" as the Game Master wishes.

The Roeper D&D Club meets every Wednesday during 4th block to continue the tales of their characters' epic deeds. We have two campaigns currently ongoing, one led by Eric and another led by student, Sam Kimball. The club was started last school year with around 6-7 students, and this year has closer to 15 members. In our hybrid model, one group is utilizing the Roll20 and DnDBeyond websites (shown in the photos) to facilitate remote learners as well as in-person. It's a great avenue for social play and creative thinking with friends!
