US Participates in SEMMUNA 2020 Conference

Matt Vallus
-Roeper Model United Nations conference this past weekend-

Last Friday and Saturday members our Roeper Model UN team attended virtually the annual SEMMUNA (South East Michigan MUN association) conference hosted by Troy High School. Over 500 students attended! It was wonderful seeing many of our delegates back in action, having fun, researching, writing position papers, and attempting to resolve very challenging humanitarian issues. Our delegates were well-researched, prepared, tactful, and well-spoken (and well-dressed). This year’s participants included:

Hannah Wise (representing China)
Matteo Papadopoulos (representing China)
David Cornier-Bridgeforth (representing Kyrgyzstan)
Sydney Levy (representing Denmark)
Ben Wedepohl (representing Czechia)
Andrew Klein (representing Pakistan)
Signe Smith (representing Denmark)
Ava Thomas (representing Denmark)
Phillip Rabinovich (representing Philippines)

Advisors include: Mike Ruddy, Matt Vallus, and Rose Li as our lead student-advisor. Special shout-out to Rose who provided background information and support in helping students research and articulate their positions.

All delegates were members of the United Nations Human Rights Council. This year’s topic was the Uyghur Crisis in Asia.

Various unofficial awards were provided within committees. Many of our delegates were voted as being: Sassiest, best-dressed, most likely to be a dictator, gamer, most funny, best actress, best researched, most well-spoken, and best ZOOM background. What a motley crew!

Future virtual conferences tentatively planned include:

3/5 and 3/6: OLINCA (Olinca High School, Mexico)
2/4 to 2/7: UTMUN (University of Toronto)
March/April: OUMUN (Oakland University) and GLIMUN (Kalamazoo)
