Got questions about your schedule? Here are some answers:
Study Hall and Free Blocks
These new Study Halls are just a free block but in an assigned room so that we can ensure attendance is being taken and social distancing is being monitored. Students will be allowed to socialize quietly or do school work, but they won't be able to wander the school like in the past.
As far as the quantity of classes/free time, each student is going to have different needs (even more so than in a normal school year). I've just been taking each student as an individual based on how much support they might need this year. (Some students who will be learning from home need to concentrate on their "core" classes so a lot of their other time will be filled with study hall and office-hour time. Other students who are in person might need no support and want to fill up as much of their schedule as possible with electives and even blocks to help other students)
Free Time vs. Extra Electives
There’s no way of knowing what things are going to feel like this year until we really begin the school year. That being said, I've been pushing caution against over-filling schedules particularly since the Drop/Add period at the beginning of the year will still function like normal and we can spend some time testing the waters once we're actually in school.
Wednesday Flex Day Flex day will be used by many students as a time to check in with teachers and get support for the classes that they don't feel like they have a handle on. This is a great opportunity for these students that we've never had before and students have just had to hope that they have a free block in common with a teacher they need to see. The other main reason for Flex day is club meetings. Now that lunches are staggered, there's no time in common that can be guaranteed free to meet with other members of a club you're a part of or a new club you want to form. Unfortunately, because clubs aren't classically registered for like classes, I (Hale) can't schedule them until after school starts. So for the start of the year, many students will have what looks like an overwhelming number of Study Halls on their schedules. These will be replaced by club meetings and academic support classes as I become aware of those needs.
