Stage IV Makes a Difference

Jarie Ruddy
During our recent intensive study, after learning of the many challenges that have faced immigrants historically and presently, Stage IV students were asking what could they do to make a difference. We learned about Freedom House, a organization which helps refugees seeking political asylum in the city of Detroit. Refugees from 28 different countries sought help from them in 2017.

We reached out to TJ Rogers, Freedom House’s Development Director, who said their immediate crucial needs were paper towels, toilet paper, and warm socks. Our wonderful student government, Carter, Ahana, Leah, Jacob, Will, Reagan, Trent, and Rebecca enthusiastically took on this project- organizing it very effectively in just two short weeks. Posters and announcements were made and bins were placed in buildings around campus. Our generous Lower School families responded overwhelmingly and the kids collected all of the items. In addition, kids working with Dee held a recess time hot chocolate sale and donated the proceeds to purchase more socks. A large van full of items was delivered to the Detroit location thanks to Stage IV parent Bret Stuntz.

We received a lovely note of appreciation from TJ which reads in part-

“What a team effort! In addition to my gratitude for the collection of goods, I am also grateful for the time you spent learning about other countries. We need more of that to build understanding and, as cliche as it sounds, bridges. I truly believe that education can make a difference in how we perceive one another and increase empathy. Gratitude to Roeper, and each of you, for your ongoing support.”
