In the Classroom: Sylvia's 6th Grade Spanish Class

Carolyn Borman
For the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, students in Sylvia's 6th Grade Spanish class played a Latin America trivia game, watched a video about the difference between Latino/a and Hispanic and learned these general rules of thumb:  "Hispanic" refers to a person who speaks Spanish. "Latino," "Latina," or the newer "Latinx" refers to a person of Latin American descent. "Spanish" is an adjective or a noun which means a person from Spain or whose origin is from Spain. The term is also a noun referring to Spanish as a language.

The class thought about and discussed what image came to their minds when they thought about Spanish people or Latin people and based on that image, they created an art piece.

The students enjoyed the activity and having their photos taken!
