In the Classroom: Middle School Math Learning by Moving

Carolyn Borman
Math doesn't mean just sitting at desks, pencil in hand, listening to the teacher and solving problems on paper. In Amy Turner's Middle School math class, parts of math class happen out in the fresh air. They went out to reinforce the concepts of adding and subtracting integers which they did on giant chalk number lines. This is more than just having fun, it's a great way to reinforce what they learn in the classroom. Research has shown that there are links between activity and improved brain power. It has something to do with how brains are wired and how the activity stimulates neurons. Scroll through to see all the photos of this activity.
