Ahmed Bitar, French and Spanish Teacher, and his Lower School classes have been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Today, his stage IV students made ofrendas to celebrate the Mexican tradition of Day of the Dead. Together, they debunked the common misconception that Day of the Dead is the Mexican version of Halloween. They learned that this is far from the truth. They discovered that the ofrendas are part of a beautiful tradition for Mexicans to remember their loved ones. Students made their own ofrendas, and decorated them with bright colors and papel picado. Some personalized their artwork by including images and objects that remind them of their own loved ones (family members, neighbors, pets, etc.) who are no longer with us.
