Great News about LS Teacher, Blake Pynnonen!

Carolyn Borman

Roeper Stage IV teacher, Blake Pynnonen, recently received amazing news. His application had been accepted to the Klingenstein Summer Institute, a two week fellowship for early career teachers. Klingenstein is part of Columbia University and it specializes in providing educational programs for teachers and administrators in Independent Schools like Roeper. Blake is the first Lower School teacher to have been accepted by the school.

When asked about this experience, Blake wrote:

During the fellowship, I will learn about various topics that should enhance my teaching, such as cognitive neuroscience, diversity/equity/inclusion/justice work to name a couple. Furthermore, I will be placed in a specialized curricular group, which I hope will focus on writing instruction.

I chose Klingenstein because of the potential to attend Columbia University in the future for a full-fledged degree program and its specialization with international and independent schools. In addition to the graduate-level credit, I hope to grow my professional network, but most importantly, gain new skills that can benefit me in the classroom at Roeper next year.

I am extremely excited for this opportunity, and I have the Roeper community to thank my chance to partake in this potentially life-changing endeavor.

Blake has also just come off his huge success in the Roeper Auction. Blake spent three years teaching in South Korea so he offered a very successful Zoom cooking class on making bibimbap, a popular Korean dish. All 8 slots were sold! Participants will receive kits with all of the ingredients to make bibimbap for 4 to 6 people.

Congratulations, Blake and a big thank you for your generosity to the community!
