Forensics Update

Roeper's US Forensics team competed in two tournaments since our prior update.

On Feb 22, the team again earned a 1st place Sweepstakes trophy in the small schools division based upon overall showing at the Spartanvitational held on the campus of MSU in East Lansing. Well attended, this tournament pitted team members against large cadres of competitors. They fared well:
  • Charlotte Silverstein, informative category, and Zion Johnson, prose, each competed in their first tournament of this season.
  • Rose Li earned a 4th place trophy in extemporaneous speaking.
  • Avery Long placed 4th out of 47 (!) in oratory.
  • Lee Must finished 2nd of 30 in sales.
Coach Dan Jacobs, along with Roeper alumni Kat Moore ('18) and Evan Buikema ('17), supported the team at the Spartanvitational. Competitors departing the meet witnessed the Roeperians break out in a spontaneous group dance session while waiting to board their bus back to Birmingham.

On Feb 29, the team traveled to Dexter for a Leapvitational tournament. Enough Roeper contestants participated to move the team up one notch into the medium schools category, yet the team still earned 2nd place in that division's Sweepstakes competition (efficiently, too, as the 1st place team fielded at least twice as many contestants to earn its points total win, while the 3rd place team scored only about half of Roeper's points total). One Roeper competitor observed that this informally named Leapvitational tournament brought to the small town perhaps "the largest total amount of people to ever purposely come to Dexter at once." Confirmation from Dexter's chamber of commerce was not available prior to this report's publication deadline. More joyful Roeperian team dancing erupted in the halls of the Dexter school following this tournament, much to the delight of other competitors.

Coach Dan, Laura Moore, and Roeper alum Maddy Harner ('18) supported the team competition at Dexter, if not the dancing.
  • Signe Smith competed in poetry.
  • Lilly Richards competed in extemporaneous speaking.
  • James Heath, impromptu, 4th place finish.
  • Francis Allen, impromptu, 3rd place finish.
  • Avery Long, oratory, 2nd place.
  • Ruby McKeever, dramatic interpretation, 6th place.
  • Lee Must, sales, 5th place.
  • Rose Lee, extemporaneous speaking, 4th place.
Rewarding themselves for their collective and individual accomplishments, the group enjoyed a super yummy supper and purchased gourmet breads (photographic evidence below) at internationally renowned Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor as a detour along the return trip from Dexter. That's how the gifted forensics kids roll...
