Gene Luen Yang

Gene Luen Yang is a graphic novelist and computer programmer famous for his books for middle grade readers, including Avatar: the Last Airbender and Secret Coders, as well as American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints, and The Shadow Hero for older readers.
During his two day visit, Gene will host an assembly for Stages III and IV students as well as workshops for students enrolled in the Adventures in Comics class.
Through his work for children and young adults as a graphic novelist and cartoonist, Gene Luen Yang shows the great potential of this medium to broaden the understanding of diverse cultures. Boxers & Saints, his graphic novel about the Boxer Rebellion was nominated for a National Book Award and won the L.A. Times Book Prize. In 2016, the Library of Congress, Every Child A Reader, and the Children’s Book Council appointed him the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. Yang received a B.S. from the University of California at Berkeley and an M.A. from California State University at East Bay. He currently teaches in Hamline University’s MFA program in Writing for Children and Young Adults.
