Visiting MacArthur Fellows

Over the past two years, the Roeper School has had the opportunity to invite MacArthur Fellows into its community as visiting instructors and mentors. Through these mentorship opportunities, students gain an understanding that they themselves can become such leaders and influence humanity.

Real-Life Collaboration

The MacArthur Foundation sees each of these fellowships as “an investment in a person’s originality, insight, and potential.” Founders George and Annemarie Roeper believed that all human beings have two central tasks: to come to understand themselves and to discover how they will contribute to the world. When Fellows and students engage in meaningful and constructive dialogue and substantive hands-on collaboration, both can benefit. Ultimately, this program aims to address the needs and passions of the students for they may be our next generation of MacArthur Fellows- the writers, scientists, artists, social scientists, humanists, teachers, and entrepreneurs who go into the world unabashed in their commitment to making something a little bit better so that our collective energies might improve human society today and in the future. 

The intention is to support the organic development of projects that link Roeper students with MacArthur Fellows. The content shared and the divisions that participate depend upon the area of study and on the vision that teachers and students have for their work. Depending on the Fellow and his/her desires and constraints, the format of the visits vary.

We are grateful for the generous support of a Roeper School alumnus whose vision and gift has made this program possible.

Experiential Learning

A Roeper core tenet states that students be given the opportunity to “… participate in the shaping of their own destiny and to consciously prepare them for it.” This requires that all students in all disciplines be given real work rather than a simplified or abridged version of anything. Whether it’s Stage I students using real hammers, Stage III creating and operating a repurposed-things store, eighth graders designing interdisciplinary solutions to global climate change, ninth graders meeting with social justice advocates in Washington, DC, or twelfth graders designing and implementing physics experiments in a university laboratory, Roeper students actively participate in their learning. They are accustomed to challenge and thrive when given the opportunity to engage with experts.

Developing Passions

Gifted students can be remarkably self-directed, and Roeper strives to support students as they discover their individual interests and passionately pursue them. What better way to extend these experiences then to give them direct and meaningful connections with adults who have been chosen because of their “extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.” The Macarthur Foundation provides Fellows with a “no-strings attached” grant that allows individuals complete freedom to engage in work of their choice and on their terms. They view Fellowship awards as an investment in people who can use their own creative energies to benefit human society.

    Roeper welcomes theater performer, playwright, and MacArthur Fellow, Anna Deavere Smith to the Upper School where she performs an original piece about race in America and meets with students taking the course, Changing the Narrative: Using Personal Stories to Build Community, inspired by last year’s visiting MacArthur Fellow, Bryan Stevenson.

  • Gene Luen Yang

    February 7-8, 2018 
    Gene Luen Yang is a graphic novelist and computer programmer famous for his books for middle grade readers, including Avatar: the Last Airbender and Secret Coders, as well as American Born ChineseBoxers & Saints, and The Shadow Hero for older readers

    During his two day visit, Gene will host an assembly for Stages III and IV students as well as workshops for students enrolled in the Adventures in Comics class.
