We’re the Roeper Sierra Club, and we want you to get involved! Based on the national Sierra Club organization, we want to make our school a more environmentally friendly place and raise awareness about environmental threats!
We’re a fun and flexible group that has raised over $300 for organizations to help people and animals affected by the Australian wildfires, and organized countless fundraisers for the World Wildlife Foundation! Over the past seven years, we’ve planned and executed numerous successful Earth Days, bringing in guest speakers like Kathryn Savoie, and demonstrations from the “Bat House” at the Cranbrook Science Center. We’ve worked to educate the upper school community about recycling, better the recycling program, and held field trips to SOCCRA’s recycling facility and University of Detroit Mercy’s “Young Bioneer’s Day” in 2018. We made efforts to decrease the amount of kitchen waste, bring healthier food options to students, and incorporate sustainable materials into the new space! We (the students) completed a grant to install water bottle filling stations, which have been a great addition to our school!
Some of our goals for the future include: participating in Fridays for Future, hosting fundraising events like game nights, vegan taste tests, and recycled crafts! We want to continue to educate the Roeper community on environmental issues like Nestle and the Great Lakes, and begin letter-writing campaigns to state representatives. We want to keep Sierra Club going for many years to come! Join us and help us save the earth!
