COVID-19 Planning: Update 2, 7.1.20

The Return to Roeper Roadmap
Dear Roeper Community,
During the past month, Board and Administrative Task Forces at The Roeper School have been actively engaged in developing our School’s plan to re-open for on-campus teaching and learning in the fall. Great progress has been made in the areas of campus operations, health and wellbeing, teaching and program, support for our faculty and staff, communication with the community, and guidance to bring these components together. As part of the work of the task forces, we continue to consult with health experts; professionals in architecture and design; and leaders in professional associations, government, and education.
On June 30th , Governor Gretchen Whitmer released The Michigan Return to School Roadmap; This state plan presents a detailed overview of required, strongly recommended and recommended steps that schools across Michigan will undertake as each public and private institution prepares to open in the fall. The plan both adds to and validates the important work of our Roeper Task Forces. While much that is described in the report has been a part of our discussions and plans, it is clear that the work of the state’s commission highlights the depth and detail we believe necessary to good planning.
As school districts across the state review these important guidelines and the financial, personnel, and operational needs required for its implementation, The Roeper School has been preparing for these needs and is poised and positioned to respond to the four scenarios outlined in the plan. Through sound fiscal management and clear and thoughtful planning, the School is making the necessary decisions to prepare our teachers and our campus for on-site teaching.
We know that the health needs within our community will require some members of our community to use the Roeper Home Learning Plan; that option will be enhanced from its spring iteration, and in place for our families. We also know that returning to campus is the overwhelming first choice and the top priority of our families and our faculty
The Michigan Plan for reopening the state is based on six phases, with phases 1-3 requiring all K-12 schools to meet teaching and learning needs through distance learning. If this is the Govenor’s assessment of the state’s condition in the fall, The Roeper School will be prepared with our Home Learning Program. However, if the Governor designates Michigan as being in phases 4-6 -- safe enough for students and teachers to return to campus in person-- The Roeper School will hold on-campus classes for our students.
In the coming weeks we will begin to share with you the details of our systems, schedules and policies for on-campus and home learning. Know that we are using the work contained in the Governor’s Plan as a valuable resource, and that the safety and care of our students, teachers and community remains our foremost priority. Roeper will publish its full plan before the end of July and will hold a second town hall Zoom meeting to share the plan with the community.

Message from Julie
As we head into the holiday weekend, I’d like to once again encourage all our current families to fill out the Roeper Home Learning Program survey. We would love to have a response from everyone!
In addition, we are happy to introduce our newly launched COVID-19: Roeper Responds webpage. This addition to our website allows us to communicate new developments quickly, gathered in one place, with links to the Michigan Safe Schools Roadmap document and other important resources. You will find links to both the survey and the new webpage below.
I hope David’s letter, above, provides you with a sense of hope for the year ahead. Several recommendations from task forces are already in draft form, and we expect to see substantial progress in the coming weeks. We are planning to publish the completed plan in late July and will schedule virtual Town Hall meetings before July 31.
Please enjoy your safe, socially-distanced Fourth of July!
Thank you,
Program Manager
