“The False Prince” receives RoughReader Award!
11/30/2012
Ten Roeper third through fifth graders in an after school enrichment class have chosen the book, “The False Prince,” by Jennifer A. Nielsen as the recipient of the RoughReader Award. This group was responsible for reading, reviewing and discussing nine currently popular books for kids during a ten week period. During the final "committee meeting," each book was discussed thoroughly, considering pros and cons and how well it fit the award criteria that the students defined at the start of the course. After the discussions, the kids voted for their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice picks. Following the point-system used by the real Newbery committee, the votes were tallied and the clear winner was “The False Prince.” The kids also chose to name “Wonder” and “The One and Only Ivan” as Honor books. The RoughReader Award was modeled after the Newbery Medal award. Students chose the name based on the school’s mascot the Roughrider.
