Earth Day Assembly Features Recycled Hats, Adopted Endangered Species & Green School Award
4/14/2010 3:45:00 PM

Students at The Roeper Lower School are looking forward to their annual Earth Day assembly which will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 (the day before Earth Day) at from 10:55 until 11:25 am in the school’s Community Center. The assembly will include a runway show of student made hats out of recycled paper bags, an announcement of the winning endangered species that the school will adopt, and an announcement of the school’s new “Evergreen School” designation.

The runway show will feature hats that 25 students made out of recycled paper bags in their art class. The class was given the challenge to create an original, sculpted hat, using only recycled grocery bags. They were inspired by artist, moses, who created over 250 hats out of bags which are now on display at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, CA. They also studied works by Irish designer, Phillip Treacy and Detroit hat designer, Mr. Song.

Students had the opportunity to vote on which endangered animal they would like the school to adopt. These results will be announced at the Earth Day Assembly.

The Roeper Lower School is also very proud to be named a “Michigan Evergreen School” this year. This new category was added to the Green School initiative to recognize schools that meet all 20 listed energy saving and environmental activities. Green Schools meet 10 of the 20 activities and Emerald Schools meet 15 of the 20 activities.

Founded in 1941, The Roeper School is a uniquely personalized, coeducational school for gifted and talented children in preschool through grade 12 from over 60 communities in southeast Michigan. With campuses in Bloomfield Hills and Birmingham, Mich., Roeper was conceived on founding principles that recognize the power of education, choice and self-expression, and the transformative impact these principles have on young minds.
