AFFORDING A ROEPER EDUCATION

Choosing an independent education is unquestionably expensive but our families find that the advantages of a Roeper education for their child are well worth the cost. The school’s personalized curriculum and careful cultivation of each child’s emotional growth and well-being will pay rewards for years to come in students who grow to become confident, creative and productive adults.

Our families have used many strategies to afford a Roeper education, including:
  • Adjusting the family’s discretionary spending
  • Accepting support from grandparents and other family members
  • Seeking contributions from church or community groups
  • Applying to national, state or regional programs and foundations

Other strategies include adjusting the tuition payment schedule to spread out the payments, seeking a loan, or applying for financial aid.

Financial Aid

If, after investigating other options, you are still not able to afford the full cost of tuition, you are encouraged to apply for financial aid from The Roeper School. Financial aid decisions are determined by the Financial Aid Committee, chaired by Mariann Hoag. To apply, families must submit a Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) to School and Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS) in Princeton, New Jersey, a service of the National Association of Independent Schools. To access forms go to: www.nais.org/financialaid/sss; please note The Roeper School code is 6130. Parents are required to mail or drop off copies of the completed PFS form along with the family's most recent federal income tax return (1040 or 1040A complete with schedules), W-2's and most recent pay stubs for all jobs held by both parents. You can mail this information to Mariann Hoag, The Roeper School, 1051 Oakland Ave., Birmingham, MI 48009.

SSS looks at many factors, including a family's total income, assets and discretionary income, to estimate the family's ability to pay school costs. The final decision to provide a grant and the amount is made by the school's Financial Aid Committee. Very few grants cover the total cost of tuition. Many of our families have a need for financial aid and we have a limited amount to give, so we choose to spread our resources among many families. We also believe it is important for the family's commitment to the school and its philosophy to participate financially to the extent they are able.

Families should submit their PFS as early as possible. New families should apply for financial aid as they begin the admissions process. Returning families should contact Roberta Jones at 248.203.7448 for a financial aid application. If you have questions about the process or about financial aid deadlines, please leave a message for Mariann Hoag at 248.203.7448. Families must reapply each year. The Financial Aid Committee reviews awards annually and adjusts them to reflect changes in the financial status of the family and the relative need of other families applying for aid.

For the children of divorced or separated parents, we ask that a separate PFS form be completed for the household of each biological parent of the child. The PFS must include income information for parent and spouse, if remarried. A non-custodial parent must complete a PFS even if he or she is not required by the court to pay child support. The financial status of both biological parents is considered when giving financial aid. A waiver may be given if the whereabouts of the non-custodial parent is unknown.

Scholarships

The Roeper School offers several types of scholarships. All are need-based, since in a school for the gifted it would be difficult to single out particular students for merit. Procedures and criteria vary, and the Admissions Department can advise applicants as to their eligiblility and whether there are openings. All recipients must successfully complete the standard entry requirements of the school. The following is a list of current Roeper scholarships.

A significant aspect of The Roeper School is the commitment to tuition assistance in order to meet our racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity goals. Roeper enjoys support from several foundations as a major partner in this vital enterprise.

Eligibility requirements for scholarship consideration is determined by the Financial Aid Committee and administered through the Development Office. Current scholar partners include the Skillman Foundation, the Bretzlaff Foundation, the Malone Foundation, the Kellogg Family Scholar and the Wetsman Endowment Scholarship.
